Looking for some tackle advice for novice Maui kayak fisherman

Aloha…

I have Hobie Mirage Revolution kayak I use mostly for whale watching and cruising but want to start doing a little fishing. I've found some Hawaii specific info… there sure is a lot out there. What I'm specifically wondering now is what would be a good starter rod/reel, by general attributes and/or specific models. I guess for start I'd just like to troll around for some samll-medium Uluas, yeah? What kind of lures should I seek out? Any other general advice would be great.

I have not fished for many, many years, so I know very little, but hope to get moderately equipped and educated to give it a shot. Any advice is much appreciated.

Hey Geoff,
I'd get a 6.5-7 foot, 20# baitcaster outfit with a levelwind to start. Penn, Shimano, Abu all the companies make them from $75 on up to the hundreds.  Troll a Krockodile or Rapala.   Read the Articles Page at the main site and refer to Aquahunters.com, a Hawaii kayak fishing site.

Aloha Geoff  !   i was born in hawaii now living in california but comming home soon to Oahu! this summer !!  i've been fishing there all of my life !! what i would recommend to you is  Penn Reels  they are really durable and has good salt corrosion resistance. just wash off after your done !  Then my next Question to you is do you like spinners or conventional reels ?  i would say a good 6 footer or so just be sure that your fishing pole can reach the front of your kayak in case the fish run in front of you. and a Penn 750ss or 850ss .  i got both and i can stop 40-50# yellowfin tuna with them !!!
