Checked North of Pt. Dume early, Westward,Trancas, Leo all looked ugly so headed to Escondido for a paddle up to the BKR. Tons of sardines, smelt, and macs everywhere, pined a dine and tried for halibut, reeled up to change bait and was hit by threasher at the yak; not big, maybe 70-80 lbs. but some good jumps and a fun ride. I was fishing 20# with a #1 red mutu hook and really didn't expect to stay hooked as long as I did. Fortunately he unbuttoned himself jumping at the boat, and saved me having to cut him loose. I'm not a big fan of shark fishing, even though they are the biggest game available,(and it's sure fun to dance with them for a while). It just seems there are a lot more fishermen hunting for them now, and a lot less of them to be caught.
I can't help but feel those remaining big predators have a much more important job alive in the ocean, than dead on my plate. (Hope I have'nt offended all you T-men out there..nothing personal)
Of course, that's easy to say when your not hungry, and have plenty of fillets in the freezer already.
Ouch!, Damn! just fell off my soapbox......
So, paddled up to the BKR, picked up a coupla small sand bass and calico, saw a few undersize WSB caught, heard of one barely keeper.
Released em all, but got a nice long paddle in to make my doctor happy.
Beautiful conditions, heard of a 48# halibut caught earlier at Paradise Cove , (now that's what I'm looking for!) So the bigguns are out there all right.
But where???
Go get em gents,
TL
