About 18 months ago, Thresher(Frank) and I went hooping.  As I carelessly grabbed the bait to put in the hoop, the spine of the fish ( I think Sandbass), penetrated my thumb and went all the way in, then broke.  That hurt. I never felt a splinter like this one before.  By the pain I was feeling, it must have hit a nerve.  It was buried deep.   That night I worked on getting it out, which I thought it did, but no avail.   From that day forward, every time I touch something with my thumb would cause a sharp pain, so by nature I stopped using that thumb.  Undecided  There were days where I would feel the thumb throb causing my eye to twitch.   Huh  Finally I sought a doctor, but he told me he might end up hitting a nerve and my thumb would no longer work.  He suggested a specialist or give it time, as in years, for the body to work the Spine out.
I opted for time.

Well, today is the big day. 18 months later.   The Spine, which sat perpendicular to the nail in my thumb finally worked it's way out.  Here is the pic.

Ahhhhhhhh, I feel so much better now.

Good news!   Smiley

Glad you are back to 100% with the digits!  Good thing it wasn't a sculpin spine!

Having a similar experience Pete, I dunno how you took the pain for so long! Here's my "story"
from awhile back. The first part addressing fish handlers disease/sculpin encounters.
"Over time your body will build up a tollerance to the stuff. First couple times I got spiked by sculpin were bad, after that almost nothing.
Couple years back while hastily loading up macs into my hoops I got spiked by a mac under my fingernail. Hurt like hell for the first day then went away.
3 weeks later while hoopin' I get the same pain in the finger again and this time it wont go away. Get home and pull this bone out....the whole fricken spine! It's the one that'll slice you on their belly.
Apparently what happened is that it logded way up under my nail, three weeks later it was "grown" out and I just happened to push it back in that night."

I think it's a picture of a spine in a pair of tweezers?  Huh

It looks more like a light switch, though.  Dang autofocus.

Yes it was a pic of the spine being held by tweezers, a pic with a coin would've been better.

Ewwww!!!

MJ thats a nasty one.  The smell of burning flesh was not enough to let up.
One year surfing down in Mexico I steped on a urchen and broke off a bit in my big toe.  Picked around with a pin and thought I got it all out.  Like you said every now a nd then I would get a sharp pain but it would go away as fast as it came.  Sure enough about a year and a half later there was a bump right under the skin and I picked at it to get what ever it was. Out came a little purple spike about 1/8 of an inch long, took me a few minutes to realize what it was.  Dam urchens.
Peace Out

Wow, so many little things can go wrong with your hands, that hurt like heck! Felons, spines, thumb burn is a good one!
Live and learn from our mistakes. If you fish long enough its bound to happen to you too. TL Rhino
