Behind illegal drugs is the sale of shark fins.  At least that is what the movie "Sharkwater" said.
The movie is suppose to be about sharks, but most of it dealt with the illegal long line fishing in Costa Rica area.
They kill sharks for the fins.  End up selling them for $$$$.

Anyone here had shark fin soup?  The movie said there is no taste in it.  Only texture.  The taste you do get is from the soup.

Good topic Pete.
Shark fin has nourishing and tonifying properties according to eastern medical theory.  The 5 element theory (often associated with the balance of a Chinese meal) fits well into the cultural diets of many people.  Unfortunately, it was easier on the Earth when we weren't trying to feed a few billion people.

I like a bowl once in awhile, from kayak caught threshers.  Not real tastey, I don't think anyone prepares the dish for more than its perceived healthy value.  Like dog.

Sport caught shark for personal consumption is OK but I believe the sale of fins should be outlawed.
