Met up with EFISH and made the trek down to LJ for my first fishing trip of the year!  We had heard the past week saw boiling yellows and several yellows on irons.  Also, humboldt squid and the occasional thresher sighting made us invest in the long drive down!  We arrive to see the launch site blocked off...but not to be discouraged (or heaven forbid unload the kayaks at the street and carry to the beach) a little offroad action at 6am was in order!  Fun and did not get stuck (whew!)! Wink  Launched into pumping surf that actually was probably 4'....which is pretty big for LJ.  Timed it and punched through 3 smaller waves on the way out with a lapful of water!  (head stayed dry-- so SUCCESS!) Grin  It was cold and breezy.  We paddle out and I troll a rapala a bit for T's....we dropper loop squid, we yoyo iron (and iron tipped with squid) for no YT.   Cry  I picked up a 4# female sheephead, a crazy mack that hit my 6oz glowing torpedo weight and inhaled it through his gills (not hooked at all), and several sanddabs (actually bigger approx 10" versions--- thought about taking them home-- but I brought the big cooler...and it just seemed silly to dirty the cooler for like 4 sanddabs!)  Eric picked up a couple rockfish and a small shark.  We did a lot of paddling....and the yo-yo'ing made my arms hurt!  About 5-6 other yakkers out-- no one having any luck.  We paddled in at 11am to arrive at launch at 12 noon (1 hr paddle back in!)   Shocked  Nice to be OTW again-- I needed the exercise....arms a little sore today from paddling and yo-yo'ing.  Unfortunately-- no trophies this time....have to try again!  Good luck all and TL for 2009!

probably....what the difference in appearance?  These were 10-12" long...so you're probably right.  Had orange spots on the body as well.

Sounds like several $26 dollar entres to me.  The 4 fillets are firm, white and usually taste like what they eat, shrinp and crab.  Cook in butter with only a hint of seasoning.  When you find 3 or 4, you should find a limit.

Dabs get fat but not much bigger than your hand.  I think an 8 incher will be as big as they get.  I've been beheading and gutting bigger dabs and foil pouching them.  Delish!
