Ankle slappers at the launch-- no wind and no swell.  It was LAKE LaJolla out there!  Warm weather-- perfect conditions to be on the water.  I was in the right zone in the AM-- I saw someone land a +30#er and he was probably only 100 yds from me when he hooked up-- I heard the strike on the clicker.  That was the only YT I heard of hooked up-- dragged greenies around all am for no strikes.  Played in the kelp with squid for 1 small sheepshead-female, released and a sanddab.  Picked up some good sized macs kept for lobster bait.  Beautiful out there.  Nice to be paddling again-- I needed today!  On the way in-- saw lots of leopard sharks in shallow about 5-6' of water....pretty cool.  Almost wanted to toss out a lure!   Shocked

Oh-- just for fun-- I counted strokes from the reserve buoy until the beach.  Approx 650 paddle strokes.   Grin

Oh well-- hopefully I can switch up the macks to lobsters some time next week!

Jason,
One of these days, when you know you are going to La Jolla, send me an email or give me a call. If I can, I'd like to go along, I learned a bunch the last and only time I fished with you and I could always learn more. I'm getting a new Outback and giving my old one to my son, so I have to pretend to be the all knowledgable Dad.  Wink  What better way to gain knowledge than La Jolla.

When I go-- it is usually as part of a business trip.  I have no problem inviting you to join me, but we wouldn't be able to carpool as I would be there either the night before or all day after fishing.  Also, I'm not an expert by any means, but I was there when E-Fish caught his first yt (17#)....I also got my other buddy his first YT (21#)on his 3rd time on the yak.  But so far for me, I have only caught 4 YT.  (1 rat, 17#, 28#, 35#)  And likely 2 dozen trips or more in 2+ years.  I have also caught 1 thresher(111#), 1 leopard (incidental), more than a dozen barries and bonita and some incidental calicos and a few short wsb.  Lots of rock fish, some sheepshead, etc.  Still have not gotten a legal WSB, even though I've seen many caught.  Ultimately, in LJ I am always fishing for YT, WSB, Thresher, or Halibut.  Anything else is truly bycatch.  I go down there for the shot at the BIG Guys....but this is a low percentage game.  I just wanted to be up front with you-- because I come back with a stripe on my back more often than not!

Otherwise, I can probably recommend a few guides down there and you will more likely be put on a fish.  (Darkhorse,Josh would be my recommendation)

I'm not looking to you as a guide or instructor, just good company with more knowledge than I have. I've fished LJ twice and wore the stripe both times, also got blown out the third, but I've always enjoyed just being there. I realize that you go on business trips, as did I the three times I've been there. No problem going down to meet you there, I'm just not real flexible on the spur-of-the-moment. My biggest problem is getting my butt outta bed as early as you do, it must be nice to be young.
