Based on some info-- not too recent-- but what I would do:

--bring a pack of squid.
--launch at 5am 'ish'
--paddle to pier
--bring 2 sticks for bait-- one fly-line and one weighted line (maybe 3oz egg)
--one stick for iron
--make bait at pier
--paddle north of pier-- fish in shallows-- paddle around some reefs trolling squid and live bait--- put squid on the low line
--if no life after 2hrs (no bait activity)-- turn around and paddle out past reserve to kelp
--troll all the way (make sure to check for weeds/junk on your lines)....make sure to run the weighted line short and the fly line long so you minimize tangles with your lines
-- GAFF BIG FISH
--Take great OTW shots
--Post awesome report
-- thank jscott for the tips!

Seriously-- good luck and tight lines!

Thanks for the directions, advice and good knowledge. . . . But, with the fires that day it took me about four hours to get there. When I arrived the wind was blowing up white caps so I decided to go on to Mission Bay where my conference was. Caught one very nice barred sand bass and one real nice fish that I think was a croaker, both released. Fished the bay two nights after meetings, but to no avail. Nice week, nice weather, nice place. Returned home on Friday, on Sat went to Channel Islands Harbor to rent a yak for my son. Then on Sun he and I and two people we met on line took a 25' mothership to Santa Cruz. . . . . to be continued with a new report in a day or so.
Thanks
Dennis

My advice, secretly stalk Trout until he gives up his spot!
