I promised my daughter Sophia, I would take her out kayakfishing for the first time. This was her first time in a kayak and fishing. The waves were anywhere from knee high to waist high. The problem was that they were breaking out further than usual and Sophia has never paddled a kayak before. Heading out she wiped out 3 times. Each time i would time the set for her and then push her out only to have her paddle the yak sideways to get hammered. After each wipeout i asked her, "do you want to go home?" Each time she stood there shaking with cold and answered, "No". On the 4th try she managed to stay straight and get out past the breakers.
After getting out i managed to calm her down and got her warmed up with the extra pair of clothes i brought for her in the drybag and told her to paddle around (with some instruction of course )to learn how to paddle, correct her stroke etc. Kids are amazing even after the fear, anxiety, hypothermia, she experienced she managed to get the hang of it and didnt give up. I was very proud of her.
To get her to learn how to fish i set up my bass rod with a sabiki and let her catch some smelt and macks so that she would learn how it feels to have a bite on the line.
Heading in she did much better. she listened to everything i said and managed to get in dry with a perfect landing. on the way home in the car she thanked me for taking her out and asked me when we could do it again.
