I went for a bike ride along the beach on 5/30 and the ocean looked absolutely great, flat calm, light wind, small swell spaced far apart. Therefore, I decided to paddle out on the 31st hoping for more of the same. I got on early start, but it got breezy at around 7.30, much earlier than I had hoped for. Since I didn't have much time I decided not to bring all my gear, simply a trolling stick and a couple of jigs. I paddled to the swim club at the end of rat's beach and that took about an hour. I trolled to Malaga Cove and then headed back to the harbor. On the way back I noticed birds diving a bit farther off shore and went in that direction. As i got closer I saw a bunch of porpoise and seals working a school of fish. It was absolute mayhem and I decided not to paddle through the middle of it. Chances are nothing would happen, but I just didn't feel it would be safe sitting in a little yak with airborne Porpoise all over the place, 20 or so seals and Pelicans diving. What a sight, certainly got my blood flowing!
Didn't get a bite all day, but had a great day regardless. These little outings get you in decent paddling shape.
Off the water by 10 and it was blowing pretty good by then. I hope calmer days are just around the corner so we can start to fish in earnest.
