Cudas at Arco

I haven't fished for cudas at Arco Island and I have some questions.
How far out do you paddle?
What water temperatures are you trying to find?
How deep are the cudas?
Thanks,
Steve A

Steve, If you launch at the beach just south of the Arco pier and island paddle straight out start trolling a coupla miles out, at least past the end of the island, and circle around, look for birds and bait. Try one plug on the surface, like a medium rapala, and another with a big torpedo sinker a few feet up the line for a deeper run. I think live bait has little use, and unless you are in them thick and can cast from you yak, trolling is the way to go. They're pretty much on top, there is no kelp of rock. Bring a heavy leader and a bigger rapala if you see a threasher around.
AnacapaBob is one who knows all, maybe you'll see him there and can pick his ample brain.
Good Luck,
Scott

got several over 40" last year...with the help of Anacapa Bob's advice!Generally they are not picky when they're on the snap.Crocodiles or any shiny spoons, rapalas even swim baits.I would suggest the jointed rapala's or Lucky craft flash minnow if you can aford them as cudas can chew'm up pretty bad.I think its the noise or rattle of these lures gets the attenion..on a party boat the bait in the water brings them around and gets them going but trolling on a kayak the noisier lures seem to get the attenion from farther off.I go straight out about a 1/4 mile past the island start tolling and take a heading uphill towards towards rincon point for as long as you got the stamina.that way on the way back you make better time, easier paddle.60 degrees or better is the temp to look for as that brings them up top they are out there when its colder but hang deeper til the water warms up.I just got the parts for my yakima so I'm ready to give it a try let me know if you want some company, lately my days off are always windy, may give it a try sat. a.m. Good luck.always keep your eye on the wind outside, safest to buddy up when your out that far!A hand held marine band radio can be got pretty cheap and is worth every penny for safetys sake!!!

perfect conditions today!Glassy, small swell, dolphins out play'n...of course this was on my way to work in SB.Spose to be a big jump in the south swell tonight tomorrow but shouldn't be a problem on the Rincon,i hope to be heading out no later than 7 a.m. company welcome, will post results....Malibu,Leo could be a challenging launch this weekend if this swell shows as predicted!

Well if they're out there I didn't find them.Conditions were not as nice as yesterday but still flat and no wind water still seems cold don't think the 60 temp has made this far up yet.Lots of dolphins and seals but not even a mackeral.Paddled all the way to Rincon point and decided to go in and throw swim baits for a possible but or at least something to bust the skunk.300 casts later with not a bump decicided to head back.was cool to watch the surf at indicator 10 people out and an occasional head high set.Did pick up a big jack smelt on the last few casts i took under the Arco bridge to bust the zilch! Lotta work for nada.So it goes, will try again!Been almost a year due to several sugeries I was not water tight most of 2009.Felt good to paddle again.

Hey Naf. Hadlate season water warm up as you noticed. My best day was 4 logs then I missed them the last time which was before the 4th of July. I might try this weekend.
Call me crazy because I know you can't "mark" a baracuda school, but ever since I lost my numbers fromj killer days of yorn, I haven't been able to "turn the key" on them. I am doing 7 miles to hunt which is fun and all but give me a break!
Let's fish 'em up sometime. It may be late in the season but who knows? Since it took forever for the water temp to break 61, we get the longer window here.
