Hi All:

It was one of those great days on the water.

I tied a different type of squid fly and used them for the first time in the kelp. The calicos hammered them. I caught and released four calicos and one sand bass. What’s cool about the fly is that the hackle feathers are sprung open when the fly is still in the water and when the fly is pulled through the water, are hackles are drawn together. The pulsing action is so seductive.  Knowing how the fly responds to movement made it easy to tease strikes.

This was also my maiden voyage with my new kayak loader – what a treat! As I often fish alone, hefting the kayak up onto my racks is not very pleasant for me. Thinking that there had to be a less stressful way of loading and unloading my yak, I found a great guy in Wyoming who made me a collapsible kayak loader. Think of a tubular steel sawhorse with rollers. Excluding the rollers the loader collapse to 2 ½ inches. I am using Yakima’s Hullyrollers and purchased them for a song online – they fit perfectly. I have hung my skin diving weight belt on a cross bar to keep the legs on the ground when pulling and pushing my yak. Problem solved.

It was a sweet day.

Good to see a report. Looks like you had calm, glassy conditions and the water is apparently warm enough to get the Calico's to bite on the surface.
I like your loader, as I am getting older it's getting harder to load my yak. Since I have a small SUV the loader would have to be a little higher, but I am gonna look into it.

Spotfin, actually, I am fishing close to the bottom as I cast my weighted fly and sinking fly line 70 feet and I can fish the full water column even on the deepest edges of the kelp. All of Sunday's fish were caught cjus  a few feet off of the bottom.
