Check ou the fron t page story on a MLPA survey, "Fishermen, Enviros Butt Heads Over MLPA Survey" at Malibu Times.com Here's my response to the editor, for your amusement: Dear Editor, Regarding your article in the Sept. 3 issue, “Fishermen, Enviros Butt Heads Over Survey" was laughably erroneous. The survey conducted by the SM Bay Restoration Fund is completely biased, the numbers flawed and skewed towards the MLPA. As any good lawyer will tell you, improper data properly manipulated can defend either side of an argument. Apparently some of your readers DID NOT catch my last letter regarding the flawed and extremely costly Marine Life Protection Act, so please allow me to reiterate: (consider my capitals as SHOUTING!) 1. IT WILL COST THE STATE $40 TO $50 MILLION PER YEAR! THIS IS FOR ALL OF CALIFORNIA, NOT JUST MALIBU. Of course the costs will increase so figure the next 20 years or so will COST THE TAXPAYERS A BILLION DOLLARS! We're severely cutting health care, social services, and education. We're giving state workers I.O.U.'s. YET WE CAN AFFORD THIS? 2. IT WON'T IMPROVE THE MARINE HABITAT. RESERVE BOUNDRIES WON'T STOP RUNOFF POLLUTION, DRIFTING TRASH, OIL OR FUEL SPILLS OR OCEAN ACIDIFACTION. The global marine environment is changing drastically and no puny reserve is going to change it. Pushing a few fishermen and divers out of Pt. Dume and Paradise Cove will only force us to other less safe areas, like more impact at Coral Beach, Latigo, Leo Carillo or Sycamore Canyon. 3. IF YOU WANT A MORE ROBUST MARINE HABITAT IMPOSE LOWER CATCH LIMITS AND SLOT LIMITS THROUGH THE DFG. That would cost nothing. And further restrict commercial quotas. STOP LIVE TRAP FISHING COMPLETELY! Probably none of you have seen the hundereds of Asian seafood markets and restaurants that keep fish alive in filthy tanks and are destroying our inshore fisheries. Take a drive to Gardena or Arcadia. Those thousands of fish, soon to be eaten, will tell you what I’m talking about. 4. The Commercial and Sport fishing landings are against any lowering of fish limits and are counterproductive in negotiating MPAs. They’re not on my side of this, and DO NOT REPRESENT MY INTERESTS. I’m all for improved marine habitats, and I’m a environmentalist and fisherman too. Their lobby is the strongest and persist in keeping Marine Conservation Areas off the bargaining table. Recreational fishermen, many who practice catch and release, will not be acknowledged by the Task Force. THERE ARE NO MCA'S CONSIDERED! NO SURF FISHERS,NO SPEAR FISHERS, NO KAYAK FISHERS. 5. Of course, to really protect the marine environment, the true intent of the MLPA; the birds and tide pool creatures, and the vegetation, THEY’LL HAVE TO CLOSE THE BEACH TO EVERYONE. Like they did at Cape Hatteras on the East Coast, or the narrow trail at Pt. Dume State Park. SO....YOU'RE NEXT!!! STILL SOUND GOOD??? -Scott Winner Pt. Dume
This response might rub some of you the wrong way, I can put some vaseline on it if you like... I also e mailed Dr. Linwood Pendleton, an extremely acredited Marine biologist and the survey author and by his comments a complete tool, how rediculous his statement was about 'seeing people fill the parking lot at Westward beach to see the marine reserve". It's not Seaworld and there won't be any dolphin shows, I told him and went on to discredit his absurd numbers. Another load of crap from another paid off psudo authority (who can blow me)....
