Introduction and question

Howdy folks,
First I'd like to introduce myself, then pester you with a question.
My name is Ron Smith and I live in Truckee, which is near Lake Tahoe. My wife and I have been kayaking for about 16 years, and now we've got our 10 year old twins into the game as well. I'm a spearfisherman and ab diver, and just picked up a Scupper Pro for diving. So far it suits me very well, but I'd like to start trolling for lake trout in my area and need to install some kind of rod holder.
I guess the two options are flush mounts behind the seat, or a Scotty type holder on a flat spot at the front of the center console. So, anyone trolling off of a Scupper? If so, what's the best setup?
Thanks,
Ron.

Hey Ron
I prefer the flushmount behind the seat,I have a fused vertabra in my neck which makes it a bit awkward to look around at the rod tips but just having them out of the way is worth it to me...If you have done a lot of yak fishing you probally know the old, keep it simple theory, the less stuff you take and have cluttering you up the better! I used to enjoy trolling for trout until the dreaded quaga mussels made it a hassle to go to my local lake. I was surprised to find that even a 12" planter is enough to easily feel when you have a fish on without seeing your rods...If you don't have back or shoulder issues that make it difficult to reach behind you and grab your rod then thats how I would do it...thats my 2 cents worth. You are lucky to live in such a beautiful place I'd love to take my yak up there but its to long a drive for me! Good luck!

Hey thanks!
I've thought about the flush mount behind the seat, but with the scupper pro tw, the seat itself sits very low, thus taking up a lot of space. I'm not sure if a flush mount would have enough room, and I'd hate to cut the rather large hole and find out it's not gonna work. I'm hoping somebody has actually mounted one on this model yak.
I'm thinking of going with the Scotty style holder at the front of the console simply because it's really easy to install without a lot of drilling, and if I dont' like it, I can live with the base mounted up there. I can also use it for just drift fishing with my kids, (they both have prowler 13's), and watch my pole while I'm dozing off in the sun...

Hey Ron,
Thanks for asking, that's why the forums are here. The sport was started with Scuppers, the first roto molded sit-on-top. The boat will tell you when you have a bite in the rear RHs, even on the lake.
No options to rig for fishing, 2 flush mounts behind you, two trolling mounts up front. There's plenty of room. Call the # for the site for detail. I like the Ram tubes up front. You'll grow into the riggings. Take your sea anchor, organize into a few dry bags/boxes and fish often. It's a great boat and stored out of the sun, will last along time...especially if it's an old one. Sit sideways and access your deck by slidin g up and down it.
Take pictures and post often.

Hey thanks Spike!
So, for mounts to the rear of the seat, are you talking about the plastic tube type that you cut around a 2" hole in they yak and then sink the holder into? I'm talking about the rod holders that come standard on the Ocean Kayak angler addition boats? I'm just concerned that the seat doesn't allow enough space for them to fit. I guess I could also install a Scotty mount back there and use a Scotty rod holder of some sort. So, what exactly are "trolling mounts up front"
Sounds like that's what I need.
As for the boat itself, it's one of the newest models. Kinda concerned about that as I've learned that the reason OC is not gonna make scuppers any longer is that their mold is worn out and they don't want to replace it. Just wondering how "worn out" that mold was when my boat was made.
I gave the hull a good coating of 303 protectant and it's hanging under the eves on the shady side of my house, where I can grab it and throw it on the truck easily. However once the snow flies, it'll hang in the garage with the other boats for the winter.

Flush mounts in the back, Scotty or better trolling mounts in the front. There's plenty of room. i'LL DETAIL THE PARTICULARS BY PHONE. I'm around about 4 pm tomorrow and through the weekend and on the road the following week. Call anytime.
