I really am beginning to appreciate these days on the water now that I have a little one at home. Damn I sure did take it for granted for all these years being able to drop everything and head to the beach to fish whenever I felt like it. Still wish I lived at Malibu Bay Club so I could get out to Harrison's Reef at a moments notice. But no regrets, my daughter is the best catch yet!
But anyway, to the report. I launched about 830am to meet AnacapaBob and his new friend Dr. Mark on the water. A pretty good sized south swell made me wait just in the water until the time was right. Punched through one wave and made it out wet but upright and ready. It must have taken 5 minutes to get from the launch to just around the point to the first kelp beds. The current was ripping uphill towards Leo and the south wind on top of it made it quick work to get around the point. Once there I made a few beautiful sardinas and headed out towards Bob off Matador beach I think.
There was a good bite all morning and into the early afternoon. 4 sandies and one calico, joined by a bunch of sharks. The sharks were all over the baits and hard to avoid. But I did get one hook up on a small thresher, off a fresh dead bait (thank you very much). After catching the small guys I wasnt quite ready for the hard run and arial display. One jump and he broke off and was free. Oh well, would have been a release anyway.
Must have retied at least ten times and went through the 20lb flouro like it was cotton thread. Muliple saw offs on the leader all day long.
The conditions were nice, overcast, south wind in the morning and the west wind never showed up, at least until 3:30pm when I went in. Took a good bit of timing to avoid the south swell but made it in dry.
Missed the old crew fishing off trancas though... Rhino? Toad? Spike---will be out with ya soon...where ya guys at?

It was great seeing you out there like the ole days Falconius! Pretty day otw for sure.
I snapped my rod tip off again in the morn and fished handicapped threw the second rod guide all day! I was still able to release 5 sharks that fought like 20 lb. halibut all day long.
Had a buddy not show up on the beach in the morning and I was left with an extra kayak which really sucked. Luckily I had an old pad lock and locked the kayak to my bumper and prayed that it wouldn't be stolen. I got lucky and so did he. What would I have done if it was stolen? Sent him a bill for the stolen kayak minus wear and tare? Or just shurgged my sholders and said "S#@! happens, it's cool?

Falcon,
Hey Daddy-O, so,no damn Sea Bass eh? Drats! Eight years later and we're still waiting for them to show. Is it the lack of squid off Trancas? Where the hell are they? or the Yellowtail, or the barracuda, or the bonito for that matter. Do I have to go to La Jolla? or Mex? Heard they're getting em pretty good down inSan Quintin, but thatsa hell of a drive.
Anyway, a least you caught some fish and didn't flip launching. Good on ya mate! More than I can say for that guy we watched with the inflatable kayak and motor trying to launch at Deercreek. I bet it cost him to repair his motor after flipping over in the surf. Expensive lesson. Motors and surf launches = bad idea.
I'm going up to the Sieras with my son on August 1st for a week and try to make some "bait", (that is Trout the size of Macs) and get the hell away from th surf and salt for a while. Anybody who wants to caravan to June, Mammoth, and Bishop for a troutathon e-mail me. Skateboaring at Volcom in Mammoth is required if I want my son to join me, of course. thats a cheap price to pay for some father and son time on the lakes and around the fire. (I'd invite you too Falcon, but I think you have an appointment with some filled up diapers, you lucky guy)
Good luck Amigo!
