MLPA info meeting in Malibu Wed June17 ...

...at 5:30-7:00 pm Malibu City Hall on Web Way and PCH. Set up by the DFG this meeting is to inform the public about the MLPA process and is not designed to discuss round 2 proposals. An important meeting just the same. Most Malibu residents are not aware of the actual MLPA proposals and how they would affect our use of certain key areas and beaches. Heal the Bay and other enviromental groups have presented their retoric in an attempt to sway the public to endorse these proposals as they stand. Not so good for me and you. Let your voice be heard.
What: MLPA Malibu Town Hall meeting
Where: Malibu City Council Hall 23815 Stuart Ranch Rd. Off Webb Way and PCH (Mapquest it)
When: Wednesday June 17 5:30-7:00 p.m.

I only caught the last 15 minutes of the meeting, but I did see Mugu in the back representing.
It seemed tensions were high, and its basically come down to the fishing lobby vs. the conservationists. I am not sure what was said during the first hour or so of the meeting, hopefully Mugu will chime in. But there was definately a good representaion from fisherman there. From the short part that I saw, it was focused on access to the Pt Dume/BKR area, of which some proposals show alot of RED areas, closing off most fishing. The presenters gave a comment (what I thought was just throwing out a bone) that there would be periodic reviews of the areas closed which could result in future changes. I doubt a closed area would ever see the light of day again though. Rhetoric.
How much of the Malibu coastline is still a viable commercial fishery? I am sorry but maybe I am being selfish, but I dont have alot of sympathy for commercial fishing and massive takes of what fish are left out there. I do want fish there for my daughter when she grows up. But I am not being blind...there seems to be a downward trend from when I stared kayakfishing 10 years ago. But thats a very small window to what could be a cyclical pattern of ups and downs. Who knows where this will lead, but I think there will be some areas of fishing left for us.
Bottom line that I got at the end from my brief visit -
Write your letters...explain your limited access points to fishing and willinginess to exchange inaccessible areas with areas that are currently accessible. The lines are being drawn.
