I'm a nubie in Ventura.  I know down south, the macs and bones push the bait fish up.  way down south the yellow tail, and whatever else.  What is pushing the bait farther north?  Should I race out to the birds crashing, or stay dragging around for halis in the shallows?  I'm just trying to learn the new fishery here.  Thanks for answers to my  Huh

What kind of birds?

All the same species occur in the Ventura fishery.

I tend to place myself in the zone instead of chase the birds.

And I hate rolling up on the birds to find sharks feeding.  Or seals if you're not looking for them.

If your scope or glasses are good enough to see on flat water, you can often ID the boil.  Make that sometimes.

If you are going after the bird boils, use metal or lob a live baoit on the outside where I've found a lot of bigger fish like WSB outside feeding calicos and YT outside baracuda boils.  YT are rare now but often show in October/November.  And they eat flylined smelt a few hundred yards outside the kelp when the little white birds are crashing and singing.

Whack `em!

I'd be interested in meeting you to chase bird schools if you are interested!  Ed in Ventura CA
