I fished Leo from 4:30 to 7:30 and it was beautiful! Water was clear to about 30' and felt warmer, very mild breeze and no low hung mung. Lots of bait, but the spiny dogfish dogged my bait the whole time. Hooked 4 and had lots of fun, pretty good fight on light gear. Kept one just to give it a taste, supposedly they were the main fish used in England for fish and chips. Has anyone eaten one of these?  Huh  A guy on a small fishing boat said he had caught two halibut just outside the kelp on the south side. Maybe things are looking up.

Have you fished the afternoon /eve often? I really like to fish that time of day but don't becasue of the wind usually.

Book-end for your Leo report, beautiful conditions in the morning from 5-11. Hate to complain, but the current was too light for a decent drift! Got a legal halibut for tonight's dinner.

Also ran into the dogfish, two released, but maybe next time I'l bleed and clean one at sea, "lemonfish" is popular in NZ and my local tackle shop guy swears they're good.

Unfortunately, I have more opportunity to fish evenings than mornings. Leo is usually way too blown out for me, so I resort to the Pt Mugu Navy beach (since I'm in the military) quite often, wind protected, easy launch, BUT so far I've never caught more than bait. Occasionally, I'll hit the Channel Islands marina in the evening, again nothing great there either. I love the evenings on the water this time of year, even if I don't catch fish.  Grin

I cooked her tonight in beer batter, and it was outstanding!  Smiley  I was skeptical because the meat seemed too firm when I filleted it. It was almost impossible to skin,  Angry but I'm sure there must be a better method. Anyway, it was very good eating and one easily fed three of us.
