I was taking my 25 year old son kayak fishing for the first time tomorrow. The list has now grown to include his friend and his dad. All of them have some kayak experience but NO surf launch experience. I looked at Surfline and it's predicting 3-4' surf for Leo, not great conditions for me much less beginners. Does anyone have any recommendations for a fun, hopefully fishy, experience for 3 beginners + one semi knowedgable? Not too far away?  Undecided

Make a nice relaxing day of it and try one of the harbors.  MDR could be fun. Do some fishing in the bays for some spotties or do some sand draging for a halbut.  Check out all the cool boats and houses on the water, lots to look at without having to take people through the surf.  If they get board take them for a paddle out side the harbor.  Should be hot this weekend, make sure they all have extra water.  Should also be lots of eye candy out, that will keep happy. Cool Cool.
Peace Out

I dont reccomend first timers at Leo- south of point at stair can be tricky- low tide rocks or surf requires experience, noth of point strong shorebreack can really ruin your day! Try Malibu pier, usually low surf, park in lot, short ramp to beach, launch south of pilings, paddle outside of pier, good spot for halibut, fish kelp outside surfers for bass. Try Malibu Inn across street for lunch. Next- a few miles north, Escondido Beach check surf at bridge, unload at bus stop-Fast! dont get a ticket- park across street carry yaks thru gate down stair and paddle north . Easy to land south of pier- bring $$ - good burgers and beer on the sand at Paradise Cove restaurant!
Good Luck and give us a report after

Here is a good link to see what the current conditions for Leo is.
http://cdip.ucsd.edu/?nav=recent&sub=nowcast&xitem=la_hs

If it is reading 1.5 feet, that is average and pretty easy to launch.  With that said, tomorrow
does not look good with the West swell of 8 seconds.  That is an almost guarantee of getting wet.
But hey!  It is summer!  Go in shorts, get wet, and have a good time.

Thanks to everyone, we ended up going to the Malibu Pier. I've never launched from there before, some shore break but nice long periods where everyone got out and returned safely. One of the kids picked up a real nice Calico, the remaining three of us were skunked.

I finally got to meet Ryno. It was nice to finally put a face to another name.
